This piece was initially inspired by Japanese kanji and the piece “Amy Reclining” by Tom Wesselman in the Chazen Museum. For the drawing, I used a bamboo brush and ink which are materials associated with Shodo calligraphy, which is a traditional art form in Japan. To honor the original art form, this piece was created in one short sitting, taking little time between brush strokes. The calculated strokes create a bold contrast between the white paper and the black ink.
For the sculpture portion of "Face to Face," I experimented with wire and wood to create the same simplified look I was going for in my drawing. I chose wire because of the similarities I saw in the connected lines of the calligraphy. The wire also best represented the visual flow of the drawing. The wire’s juxtaposition on a white background represents the theme of contrast because otherwise the piece itself wouldn’t be visible. |
